B.K.S. Iyengar

There are a host of therapies available at Warwickshire Wellbeing Clinic, some that you may have heard of and some that will probably be new to you.

Therapies can be used to target a specific physical, mental, emotional or spiritual problem, or act as a preventative measure, to increase your sense of well-being or purely for relaxation.

Here is a list of treatments we currently offer. We will be offering more services gradually as we expand and enhance our new clinic.

Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a traditional therapy using very fine needles inserted into the body. Medical
Acupuncture places acupuncture in the context of our scientific understanding of health and
disease. It is supported by scientific research and uses conventional diagnosis by a medically
trained practitioner, so you know you are in safe hands. Modern research demonstrates the
effects of acupuncture on the brain and spinal cord, it stimulates the body’s natural pain killers
and other neuropeptides. It has well documented affects on reducing pain especially myofacial
pain. However, more recent research shows its effect on many other body systems supporting
its use for many other health conditions. Its powerful effects on the brain, particularly the limbic
system, has been found to produce positive psychological affects, reducing anxiety, encouraging
relaxation, helping with sleeplessness and promoting an overall sense of well being.

The National Institute of Clinical Excellence support the use of acupuncture for some common
medical conditions such as Migraine, Tension Headache, Low Back Pain, Osteoarthritis of the
knee and Overactive Bladder Syndrome. In fact a Cochrane Review of scientific evidence for
Migraine reported that " acupuncture is at least as effective as, possible more effective then,
prophylactic drug treatment, and has few side effects”

Anti-wrinkle injections
Aromatherapy Massage
Combining high quality pure essential oils, blended especially for the individual to aid their particular requirements. Essential oils have various therapeutic effects such as analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, calming, sedative to name but a few. The oils are massaged into the body, penetrating through the pores of the skin and into the blood stream being carried around, to improve physical and emotional well being. During body massage dead skin cells are removed leaving you skin refreshed and rejuvenated. Aromatherapy helps promote health and vitality stimulating the body to heal itself, by boosting the immune system and improving circulation.
Art Therapy

Art Therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses art media as its primary mode of communication.Clients do not need not have previous experience or skill in art.The art therapist is not primarily concerned with making an aesthetic or diagnostic assessment of the client's image. The overall aim of its practitioners is to enable a client to effect change and growth on a personal level through the use of art materials in a safe and facilitating environment.

The relationship between the therapist and the client is of central importance, but art therapy differs from other psychological therapies in that it is a three way process between the client, the therapist and the image or artefact. Thus it offers the opportunity for expression and communication and can be particularly helpful to people who find it hard to express their thoughts and feelings verbally.

The group sessions are held at Jan Rawnsley Art Studio in Leek Wootton on 3 Tuesdays every month from 10am to 2.30pm.The cost will be £20 per day but £50 for all three days if reserved and paid in advance. The cost will include tea/coffee & biscuits on arrival and tea/coffee at lunchtime.
Bowen Technique

Bowen is an extremely gentle, hands-on holistic muscle release therapy used in humans and animals. It was pioneered by Thomas Ambrose Bowen born in 1916 in Australia.

How does it work? The technique appears to activate the body's own healing abilities, releasing muscle spasms and re-aligning skeletal imbalances as well as increasing lymphatic drainage and blood supply to the affected areas to enhance healing.

The treatments. The practitioner uses her hands on specific parts of the body such as muscle and other soft tissue, using gentle rolling movements with a view to activating communication between nerve endings and the brain to facilitate healing. This aims to restore natural pain free movement. The treatment sessions are about an hour and can be given through light clothing.

Chiropractic

Chiropractic is a drug-free method of improving your health by helping the body's nervous system work as effectively and efficiently as possible. Gentle adjustments realign the complex skeletal system, rectifying imbalances in the body to relieve pain and increase mobility. Chiropractic helps your body relieve pain and discomfort, including conditions such as:

· Back, neck and shoulder pain

· Headaches and migraines

· Muscle tension

· Pain and stiffness in joints

· Sports injuries

· Arthritic pain

Crystal and Energy work
Crystal Therapy is the ancient art of laying-on-of-stones. Gems, stones and crystals are laid on the body over the chakra points. Each chakra resonates to a particular color, so by laying a stone of that color over the chakra, the chakras open, align and blend with one another. When the chakra system is balanced, the physical body is able to innately self-correct and heal.

This helps to remove negativity and restores positive energy, and
well-being. A lovely uplifting treatment, done through clients clothing.

Hopi Ear Candles

Hopi Ear candeling (also known Thermal Auricular Therapy) is a pleasant and non-invasive treatment of the ears, it is used to offer real and calming benefits for many problems and conditions associated with the ear, nose and throat areas. The therapy is widely used by doctors in Europe and America as an alternative to conventional treatments such as antibiotics, ear syringing and grommets. A Hopi ear candle treatment is a deeply relaxing, calming and soothing experience.

The process of Hopi candling involves a specially designed hollow candle being inserted just inside the ear canal. The hopi candle is then lit and the suction that is formed draws secretion flow is gently stimulated and the vapour collects and removes impurities or deposits. Often referred to as the ‘chimney' effect. The rising air gives the ear drum a gentle massage and also helps to regulate ear pressure. This is soothing, calming and protects the irritated areas.

Most of theseare carried away through the candle "chimney", although some of them can be found in the condensed or lower section of candle wax after removal fromthe ear, or could even work their way up to the surface 24-48 hours after.

Hot Stone Massage
Using basalt stones a gift from nature, this treatment is ultimately relaxing, releasing tension from muscles, aiding aches and pains and has a soothing, warming effect. The stones are massaged over the skin with essential oil infused carrier oil.
A perfect winter treatment.
Hypnotherapy
Hypnotherapy helps to treat many different issues from stress, anxiety, phobias and fears to confidence building, blushing, giving up smoking, losing weight and much more. It works by accessing our unconscious minds where all our emotions and behaviours are stored. Unlike other forms of therapy, Clinical Hypnotherapy often works rapidly to help you make changes, as you are harnessing the most powerful parts of your mind to bring about change.

Through hypnosis a deep state of relaxation is induced, during which our unconscious minds become highly receptive to new or alternative perspectives and ideas. A primary concern of our unconscious minds is to keep us safe, well and happy. At times our minds can store negative behaviours which can become problematic for us later in life.

Through hypnosis the client and therapist can agree on which behaviours need challenging in the unconscious and work together to change these unhelpful habits and behaviours.
Indian Head Massage

Indian Head Massage is based on the ancient healing system of Ayuverda.

The aim of Indian head Massage is to release the stress that has accumulated in the tissues, muscle and joints of the head, face, neck and shoulders. These areas are massaged using firm yet gentle rhythmic movements that involve acupressure points called Marma points. The experience is deeply calming and relaxing, leaving you feeling energised and revitalised and better able to concentrate

As well as easing headaches and stress, the conditions it can help are many:

- Relief from the pain and stiffness in the muscle of the face, neck and shoulders resulting in an increase mobility around face, neck and shoulders

- Relief from tension headaches, eyestrain, nasal congestions, apathy and mild depression

- Improve creativity, clarity of mind and powers of concentration

- An increase in blood circulation and a reduction in the possibility of developing arthritis in the neck and shoulders

- Improves the efficiency of the lymphatic system and strengthens the immune system

Reflexology
Reflexology is an ancient healing art based on the presence of ten energy zones within the body. With Reflexology, your body’s health is reflected in your feet. The various organs, nerves and glands in your body are connected with certain ‘reflex areas’ on the soles, toes, tops and sides of your feet. By applying pressure to specific areas on the feet, remarkable healing effects are noted in seemingly unconnected and unrelated distant regions.

It is a safe and simple therapy which promotes better health by reducing stress and tension, strengthening the body’s ability to resist disease, flushing toxins out of the system, and improving circulation so the body can heal itself. This brings your body into balance and promotes good health.

The treatment helps to promote relaxation, release tension and stress and improve sleep, increasing a sense of well being. By treating the whole person through touch on the feet, Reflexology may help the body maintain it's natural balance.
Reiki

Reiki is a hands on system of energy healing and balancing which works on all levels, physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. UNIVERSAL LIFE FORCE (Rei) and ENERGY (Ki) is channelled through the therapist and felt generally as a beautiful heat by the recipient, resulting in a profound level of calm, peace and balance. The treatment follows the body’s energy centres or chakras which themselves correspond to the organs and glands, either stimulating or sedating the amount of energy in each vital area. Reiki works directly to stimulate the body’s natural healing ability, speeding up recovery from illness or injury, improving energy levels, reducing stress on all levels by improving our sense of responsibility to our health, our lives and others.

Anyone can receive Reiki, will do no harm, will enhance all other therapies and will hopefully enlighten the receivers own joy.

Shiatsu
Shiatsu is a Japanese hands-on therapy developed from the techniques of anma (Japanese traditional massage), acupressure, stretching, and Western massage. Shiatsu involves applying pressure to special points or areas on the body in order to maintain physical and mental well being, treat disease, or alleviate discomfort.

All types of acupressure generally focus on the same pressure points and energy pathways, but may differ in terms of massage technique. Shiatsu, which can be translated as finger pressure, has been described as needle-free acupuncture.

It is based on the concept of ki or chi, a term for the universal energy that flows through the body along special energy pathways called meridians, each of which is associated with a vital organ. In Asian systems of traditional medicine, diseases are often believed to occur due to disruptions in the flow of this energy through the body. These disruptions may stem from emotional factors, or other causes like stress, impurities in the body and physical trauma.

The aim of shiatsu is to restore the proper flow of bodily energy by massaging the surface of the skin along the meridian lines.

Speech and Language Therapy
Sports Massage

Sports massage therapy helps alleviate the stress and tension which builds up in the body’s soft tissues as a result of physical activity.

Where minor injuries or lesions occur, due to overexertion / overuse, massage can break them down. Above all, it can help prevent those niggling injuries that so often get in the way of performance and achievement whatever you level of involvement in sport.

Anyone can benefit from sports massage, such as people in physically demanding jobs and those not quite so obvious occupational, emotional and postural stresses that affect us all. It is based on the various elements of Swedish massage and often incorporates a combination of other techniques involving stretching, compression, friction, toning, and trigger point response techniques similar to Acupressure and Shiatsu and tends to be deeper and more intense. The skilled therapist brings together this blend of techniques, knowledge and advice during treatment, to work effectively with the client to bring about optimum performance and to provide injury free training and minimise post event injuries.

Sports Therapy

Swedish Massage
Swedish Massage is a system of long strokes, kneading, friction, tapping, percussion, vibration and shaking motions that apply pressure between muscles and bones, rubbing in the same direction as the flow of blood returning to the heart. Swedish Massage feels good, is relaxing and invigorating.

The main purpose of Swedish Massage is to increase the oxygen flow in the blood and release toxins from the muscles. Some other benefits of this massage style include shortening recovery time from muscular strain, increased circulation without increased heart load, stretching of ligaments and tendons, skin stimulation and soothing of the nervous system. It reduces stress, both emotional and physical, and is suggested as part of a regular program for stress management.

The patient is required to be appropriately unclothed for the treatments, which would usually be for an hour, although longer or shorter massage treatments are also possible.
Thai Massage

Thai Hot Herbal Compress Massage

The use of Herbal Heated Compresses is a traditional method of therapy which has been used for centuries throughout Thailand to relieve weary bodies and minds.

The hot herbal compresses contain numerous aromatic herbs tightly bound in pure cotton which are then soaked and steamed to infuse the contents of the herbs. The compresses are then applied to the entire body with Eastern massage techniques using patting, pounding, kneading and rolling movements along with gentle, but deeply effective massage.

Energy channels in the body known as ‘Sen lines’ are treated to enter the body into deep relaxation, relieving stress and promoting emotional and physical wellbeing.

The compresses possess herbs such as, Lemongrass, Ginger, Turmeric and Kaffir Lime which are anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, astringent and antioxidant.

The heat from the compress, carries these herbal essences, deep into the pores of the skin, releasing their healing benefits, and stimulating the vital organs and senses.

The treatment helps to soothe sore muscles, increases circulation, relieves tension, promotes relaxation, improve mood, ease congestion, relieves stress and fatigue and aids sleep, amongst many other healing benefits.

This massage is not suitable if you are sensitive to heat or medication that can cause a sensitivity to heat, or if you are suffering from sunburn.
